Hop in your car in Dallas, Georgia and drive just 15 miles or 20 minutes west on Highway 120 and you’ll discover the tiny unincorporated community of Draketown. Draketown is the first neighborhood one encounters in Haralson County after leaving Paulding County. As an unincorporated community, the businesses and addresses tend to be associated with nearby Temple to the south of town.
Draketown (also spelled Drake Town by at least one business) is a scattering of homes, businesses, and family farms lining 113 both east and south, and continuing on to 120 headed further west. According to a historical sketch of Draketown written by Peggy Kimball, Coppermine Road is a tribute to the original settlers mining of copper, though they had originally come seeking gold.
There are no municipal parks in town, but there is a large bandstand on the corner of Hutcheson Road and John Golden Road and green space. Before attempting to picnic or play a ball game there, one should check in with the nearest home, as this land may be privately-owned property. It lies across the street from Draketown Baptist Church.
Businesses include Moon Auto Repair, Heritage Propane, and a Superette Marathon Gas Station. There’s little else in terms of commercial enterprise in town. There is one recommended restaurant next to the gas station, Phat Phil’s at 8901 GA-120, where they sell smoked turkey, roast pork loin, beef brisket, fried cod, catfish, pecan pork, and other downhome treats like collard greens and zipper peas. It’s an uncontroversial choice in comparison to the only other closest dining option according to social media reviews, and it’s likely one’s best and preferred dining choice in the area.
For those of a religious inclination, the Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church is also located on the main highway. Just off of McBrayer Road is the nearby Edgefield Missionary Baptist Church, located on a small pond.
