When it comes to roofing, oftentimes you end up with a sloped roof. But flat roofs are also an option. They aren’t especially glamorous and won’t give you any fashion awards, though. They’re among the most debated types of roofs for any building.
Of everything positive about a flat roof, its low expense compared to other types of roofs is probably the biggest thing in its favor. Anywhere in the process – from building, to installing, even when selecting the materials that’ll go into the roof itself – a flat roof is cheap (relatively speaking). As such, flat roofs are generally very affordable. Depending on your personal tastes, you can even do such whimsical things as put a barbecue on the roof. Since flat roofs, true to their name, don’t create sloping walls, it’s also possible to have interior spaces on the top floor without them being cramped.
Sadly, while we at 1OAK Roofing are some of the best in the business, we can only do so much to mitigate the disadvantages of having a flat roof. First in the list of disadvantages: the more area your flat roof has, the less stability it has. Larger buildings, such as office buildings in businesses and industrial buildings, have to build interior compensation for the weight of a flat roof. Materials used in flat roofs are also a bit on the scarce side; we try to offer as many options as we can, but there still aren’t as many as for a more traditional roof. Flat roofs have a lifespan of around ten to fifteen years, somewhat less than a more traditional roof. However, the largest disadvantage of a flat roof is undoubtedly the draining – or lack thereof, rather. Being flat, water tends to pool on the roof instead of flowing down off it. Standing water may cause damage to nearby structural elements. If you’re thinking of a flat roof, make sure to call us so we can discuss drainage possibilities.
At 1OAK, roofing is our thing. If you want a roof, come talk to us; we’re sure we can work something out.
