Be Charmed, Be Prosperous, Belong:
The History of Cartersville, Georgia

On the northwest edge of the Atlanta metropolitan area lies a town full of history: Cartersville. Cartersville is perhaps one of the oldest colonized areas in the United States. Around 200 BC, Middle Woodland Indians settled in the region now commonly known as Georgia. Just like many other tribes, the Middle Woodland Indians disappeared into thin air leaving no evidence of their existence behind. If any members remained. then those become the Creek. The Creek lived in that region until 1755, until the Cherokee Indians came over and defeated them in the Battle of Taliwa. They ruled the land until 1833. Although all this sounds realistic, there is no actual proof of these tribes settling down in the region. What we do know for a fact is that there were settlers in 1832. Cartersville was known as Birmingham to the original settlers. In 1846, the name changed from Birmingham to Cartersville. It was named after a wealthy businessman: Farish Carter. Carterville became a fast growing town because of the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. The railroad provided transportation along with exporting materials to other cities. Cartersville was involved in the Civil War as well. General Joseph E. Johnson took control over the depot, and this aided the Confederates as they made their escape across the Etowah River.

Cartersville is not only filled with historical background, but it also has various attractions around town. There are many attractions in Cartersville that are family-friendly, and the cost of admission is fairly low and some are free. There are multiple museums to visit in town. There is the Booth Western Museum, which is the largest permanent exhibition for Western art in the United States and contains art from artists in the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. The Tellus Science Museum features galleries dedicated to minerals, fossils, transportation technology and hands-on science experiments. The Rose Lawn Museum is a Victorian mansion that was home to the famous evangelist Samuel Jones. The Bartow History Museum showcases the everyday life of Cherokee, the Civil War, and early 20th century life. As well as the Euharlee Covered Bridge and History Museum which features the bridge built by the African American contractor Washington King.

The site features a museum that interprets the everyday life of the Native Americans who resided there many years ago. This attraction is filled with impressive models that the Natives used. Cartersville not only contains historical attractions, but also outdoor activities. Some of them being golf courses, parks, and lakes for fishing and boating.

“Be Charmed, Be Prosperous, Belong” is the motto of Cartersville. The motto speaks for itself and no explanation is needed. Cartersville is the town to visit if you are looking for a place that is inviting, full of attractions for all ages, and has the atmosphere of a bigger city.
