Brownsville, Georgia is located in the farthest southeastern corner of Paulding County, along State Route 92 (Hiram Douglasville Highway). Buildings are concentrated on the east-west running road named Sweetwater Church Road to the west and Brownsville Road to the east. The unincorporated hamlet is about a 7 minute drive north of Douglasville and a 15 mile drive south of Hiram. The area is heavily forested, with many side streets leading suburban housing set along cul-de-sacs and dead ends.
While it is not certain, the town may have been named for Reverend John Brown, a pioneering Methodist minister.
Brownsville’s food options include MBY Jamaican Cuisine, Subway, and Domino’s Pizza. There’s a community animal clinic, Advance Auto Parts, Chevron gas station, and a Dollar General. Locals can purchase groceries from Food Depot. There are several other small business at the Brownsville Crossing and Brownsville Square strip malls. There is no post office, as it closed down in 1905.
The local faithful gather at The Mount Zion Church, New Genesis Baptist Church, and the Gathering House, each located west, south, and east of the community respectively.
The nearest outdoor parks are outside of town. Jessie G. Davis Memorial Park provides 17 acres for basketball, football, an outdoor pool, picnic pavilions and grills, and an annual horseshoe tournament. The Alice J. Hawthorne Center provides a computer lab, community room and kitchen, and gym with a basketball court and volleyball court. The gym is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only.
Most younger students attend Hal Hutchens Elementary located just a few miles down Sweetwater Church Road, while a few children on the northern edge of town may go to Baggett Elementary. The very youngest children may attend Sweetwater Academy, technically in Douglasville though just a few miles south of Brownsville. The school educates infants, toddlers, preschool and Georgia Pre-K, as well as offering after school and summer camp services for students aged K-12.
