During the Civil War, Camp McDonald was set in Big Shanty. 1850’s Lemuel Kendrick started a hotel called the Lacy Hotel. This was where the infamous “ Great Locomotive Chase” started. The Chase was when Union soldiers tried to dismantle the tracks and cut off communication lines. Conductor William Fuller foiled their plans. The town continued to prosper even in the 1900s. During the 20th century, cotton became very important. As the Great Depression occurred, the cotton industry went out of business. Just like many other towns, Kennesaw recovered. This is mainly because people from major cities like Atlanta moved to smaller towns.
One of the reasons that makes Kennesaw special is the Gun Law. In May 1,1982, the town passed a law declaring “every head of household to maintain a firearm together with ammunition”. It is because of this law that the town still remains the town with the lowest crime rate in Cobb County.
Kennesaw has numerous attractions. Kennesaw Mountain National Park is a Civil War site that was a battlefield. There are still artifacts that remain, and those are showcased. The Smith-Gilbert Gardens is a botanical garden; it features over 3,000 different types of special flowers and plants. The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History is a Smithsonian Affiliations member. At the museum, there is a collection of Civil War artifacts. Another highlight is the belt-driven locomotive assembly line called the Glover Machine Works. There are multiple hands-on activities. The town has numerous historical memorials and attraction, but there are also parks, outdoor sports fields, and recreation facilities. Swift Cantrell Park has about 130- acres and on site are playgrounds, trails, and pavilions. Adams Park is a community center that has a baseball field and soccer field. Mountasia has a variety of games like mini golf and go karting. Kennesaw, Georgia is a family oriented town. Even though it may be small, there are endless activities and attractions.
