Cobb County was the site for many historical events. It mainly served as a battlefield for wars. One of them being the Civil War. However, historical museums are not the only featured museums. There are many types of museums located in Cobb County.
The museum provides viewers with the strategic and economic use of railroads during the Civil War and displays railroads from Georgia and neighboring states. The museum is known for its centerpiece General, a steam locomotive used in the Great Locomotive Chase. Besides the General, the museum has a collection of records, drawings, blueprints, glass plate negatives, and photographs portraying the railroad industry in the South after the Civil War. The museum also contains some more Civil War material such as letters, diaries, and official records.The museum first opened in 1972 with the name of Big Shanty Museum and the General being its centerpiece. However, the museum was later closed in 2001 when more Civil War pieces were added. The museum reopened in early 2003 as Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History.
