Museums in Kennesaw, GA

Cobb County was the site for many historical events. It mainly served as a battlefield for wars. One of them being the Civil War. However, historical museums are not the only featured museums. There are many types of museums located in Cobb County.

Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History

The museum provides viewers with the strategic and economic use of railroads during the Civil War and displays railroads from Georgia and neighboring states. The museum is known for its centerpiece General, a steam locomotive used in the Great Locomotive Chase. Besides the General, the museum has a collection of records, drawings, blueprints, glass plate negatives, and photographs portraying the railroad industry in the South after the Civil War. The museum also contains some more Civil War material such as letters, diaries, and official records.The museum first opened in 1972 with the name of Big Shanty Museum and the General being its centerpiece. However, the museum was later closed in 2001 when more Civil War pieces were added. The museum reopened in early 2003 as Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History.

The Depot

Originally built for goods and passenger transport in 1908, the Depot is currently used for museum exhibits full of collections of artifacts and photographs regarding the history of Kennesaw. All the exhibits are put together by Murphy & Orr Exhibits of Forest Park, Georgia. The museum also showcases artifacts found from digging up the Lacy Hotel. Some of them being stonewares, bullets from Civil War Confederate and Union officer uniform buttons, and arrowheads. The Depot is filled with history from the past.

Zuckerman Art Museum

Aside from historical museums, Kennesaw also has an art museum. Majority of the artwork is featured from the art department at Kennesaw State University. They also showcase local and national artists’ work as well.
