Short History of Austell Georgia
Austell was frequented in its history by hunters and trappers on their way to the area’s salt licks. These early visitors thought the area’s waters had medicinal benefits. As immigration increased and demand for land near the spring grew, G. O. Mozely donated and subdivided 40 acres of his land in which families could move to and build, creating a new city.
The town is named for General Alfred Austell, founder of the Atlanta National Bank, for his efforts in bringing major railways to the South. Austell is buried in an elaborate mausoleum at the highest point in Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery.
